The first step in retaining our law firm's services is to set up a consultation with one of our lawyers. At the consultation, we will review whether you have a legal claim, and, if so, what are the claim's strengths and weaknesses, and we will advise you how best to proceed. If you are seeing us about an employment dispute, we will advise you whether it makes sense to hire a lawyer at all; whether an attorney should be retained to negotiate with your employer; or whether it is appropriate to undertake a legal action before an administrative agency, a court, or arbitration forum.
There also might be instances where we require additional information or need to research a particularly complex issue before giving you legal advice. If, after receiving our assessment of your case, you decide that you want to retain our firm, we will discuss fee arrangements with you. Of course, at that first consultation, you don't have to make a decision about retaining us; you can go home, think about it and then make a decision. Our goal in the consultation is for you to have a full and clear understanding of your options.
